Breyer SECRETARIAT
Breyer Traditional Mold
Ask anyone to name the world’s most famous horse and the answer will most likely be Secretariat. His true story is still the stuff of legend. His astonishing 31-length victory in the Belmont Stakes, accomplished after winning the first two racing jewels in the Triple Crown, has yet to be repeated. In the Kentucky Derby, Secretariat set a speed record of 1:59 2/5, and he captured the Preakness Stake with ease.
Secretariat was the son of Bold Ruler out of Somethingroyal. Known as “Big Red”, the large, beautifully conformed chestnut ran in the blue and white checkered colors of Meadow Stables. He made it on two “Athletes of the Century” lists for his accomplishments and brought fame to those who surrounded him including trainer Lucien Lauren, jockey Ron Turcotte, and the Chenery family who owned him. Even today, “Big Red’s” star power still shines bright!

How Breyer Model Horses Are Made
Breyer model horses are perfect for horse lovers and collectors of all ages. They are the product of Reeves International, who has produced them since the early 1950s. Although the models are marketed as toys, they are also cherished by adult hobbyists who collect and trade them. Breyer Horses are among one of the most enduring toy collectibles to emerge from the 1950s. They were instantly popular then and remain so today.
Breyer model horses are produced in four sizes from the traditional 1/9 scale Traditional Series to the smallest size Stablemate Series at 1/32 scale. They are beautifully detailed and handcrafted and produced using a very intricate process. According to Reeves International: “Approximately 20 different artisans handle each individual Breyer® model from start to finish – a process, which, 54 years later, is still done by human hands, not machines. Even today, no two Breyer® model horses are ever exactly alike!”
First an original model is created by an artist who sculpts it from clay. The clay model is used to make a steel mold and melted cellulose acetate is injected into the molds. The models are then cooled before they are assembled and finished.
The finished models are painted with airbrushes, but the smallest details are hand-painted. The hand-painted details are never exactly the same from horse to horse, meaning each Breyer horse is truly a one-of-a-kind. One mold is used to produce horses that will be painted several different color variations. There may be a bay, a pinto, an appaloosa and more, all with the same body shape. The model number of the Breyer Horse is based on their color, not their body shape.
Collecting models created by specific artists is one way to narrow your collection. To collect every Breyer model in every color scheme would take quite a warehouse to hold! Breyer horses are extremely affordable, so getting started in collecting them is not only easy but affordable. Small Breyer Stablemate models cost about $5, with used ones on eBay going for less than $5.
